HI Bryan,
You are correct in stating camping was actually on a upswing, I mentioned that in another post, but I was concerned about the National Parks and the decline of visitors.
I have some great memories of Smokemount, including a black bear sharing my tent. Thanks for the comment!

I do not agree with the article, camping the past year has had an upswing, maybe visitors are down in the national parks, but state and local plus private parks are up. I recenlty camped at Smokemount, it was full, no I will say most state and private campgronds are way nicer, all have more to offer...But If you want seculusion Smokemount was great, but very different than back in the 70's, then it was busier..

Hi Christy,
Without knowing where you will be close to, its a little hard to give advice. If it were closer to springtime theres some great places like that in and around the Mtns. You could checkout the NC Mtn to sea trail, hike a little bit of it, or S Carolinas Palmetto Trail. Covers over half the state and also goes to the coast. It you narrow it down, holler back at me. Have fun!

My boyfriend and I are looking for a nice camping/hiking stop that is somewhat secluded in NC or SC. We are trying to stay away from the family and RV sites. Preferably near a body of water. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

I've camped at many of the NC State parks, I'll tell you my favorites: http://ils.unc.edu/parkproject/visit/ncmap.html

NC Mountains: Mount Mitchell (gorgeous but only a very few campsites available plus hiking) or New River (right on the river, of course)
NC North Central: Hanging Rock (camping, lake)
NC South Central: Raven Rock (camping, hiking, on a river)
NC Coast: Carolina Beach (camping, on the intracoastal)

You can also camp in the Mountains in the Great Smoky Mtns National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, or at the coast at Hattaras National Seashore: http://www.nps.gov/state/nc/

Here's general information about NC (look at the "Where to Stay" link and beside "Find" select "Camping"): http://www.visitnc.com/

Have fun!
